The MF Archive Special, Ferguson TE20 - Mechanisation of the Farm

    MF-TE20

The MF Archive Special, Ferguson TE20 - Mechanisation of the Farm

In this fourth MFA Special Edition using genuine archive films, we take a look at the impact Harry Ferguson’s tractors and implements made to the mechanisation of the farm.

We look at new and efficient ways of dealing with the day to day labour intensive problems of keeping livestock by making use of existing equipment– which usually included the TE20. We also focus on mechanised crop row thinning and in particular sugar beet. A film released in Australia all about the Fergie is highlighted and by all accounts the locals were mighty impressed.

Hen’s teeth are more common than film of the Ferguson Model A tractor - better known as the Ferguson-Brown! This home movie footage of it harvesting and ploughing demonstrated beautifully what life was like all those years ago.

Farmers who farmed ‘The Ferguson Way’ expected top quality products with top quality service and that’s exactly what they got. Also included is a rousing call for building economically produced high quality tractors, based on Ferguson’s factory at Banner Lane.

So with considerable help from the TE20, farming became much more efficient and that famous ‘three point hitch and hydraulic system’ is still fitted to most tractors today – what an incredible legacy to Mechanisation of the Farm.

Massey Ferguson's Thinking Tractors Part Three - End of an Era

In this programme we take our final look at the 3000, 3100 and 3600 Series tractors from Massey Ferguson as they enter their final phase of development.

A close look is given to the new Dynashift transmission and its unique benefits. We then move on to take in the sights of the Beauvais factory in France before looking at the latest models to be introduced: the 3120 and 3075 both in the UK and the USA.

Finally we see how the Massey Ferguson tractors developed afterwards and how the thinking tractor pedigree continues right up to the present day.

The wealth of original Massey Ferguson films is joined by case studies of a 3635 and a very hard-working 3075.

    Massey Ferguson Combine part 2

    MF-combine-2

Massey Ferguson combine part 2. "Walkers, Rotaries and Hybrids"

The second part of two programmes in which – using archive footage from AGCO – Tractor Barn tells the story of the Massey Ferguson combine from the reaper to the latest high-tech machines.
Part Two picks up the story at the beginning of the 1970s with the new 520, 525 and 625 combines built in Europe, before moving on to the American 800 Series giants and then the smaller European versions. A giant rotary combine appeared in the 1980s that had been developed by White and then MF entered into an agreements with Dronningborg of Denmark to produce a range of European combines as well as Finnish company Sampo for a range of compact and plot machines.

The Dronningborg connection gave MF a leap forward in electronic monitor technology that would lead to the introduction of field mapping using satellites with the 30 Series machines. This was the dawn of precision farming. After the purchase of MF by AGCO the combine line was soon rejuvenated with many more models appearing once again in the USA thanks to the use of Gleaner technology.

In the 21st century a whole range of combines is built for Massey Ferguson by Laverda giving a comprehensive coverage, fit for harvest fields all over the world.

Both Parts One and Two use original Massey Ferguson archive film taken when the featured machines were new and at work. Taken together, these two programmes tell the fascinating story of the development of the red combine harvester line from its origins right up to the present day and also include glimpses of how these machines were built in factories in Canada, Scotland and Denmark

    Massey Ferguson Combine part 1

    1847-1980. Reapers to Giants

The first part of two programmes in which – using archive footage from AGCO – Tractor Barn tells the story of the Massey Ferguson combine from reaper to the latest high-tech machines.

Part One starts in 1847 with reapers and moves through binders, the Massey-Harris merger and then the successful reaper-threshers built by this company that introduced the rasp-bar cylinder method of threshing. Then Massey-Harris set a worldwide trend when they produced the first self-propelled combine, the 20SP, followed by the hugely successful 21SP that became famous as the instrument of the Harvest Brigade in North America in 1944.

The combine range gradually evolved and soon combines where being made in Europe as well as Canada and the Massey Ferguson 400 and 500 Series and their derivatives were among the best selling combines of the 1960s.

In the mid 1970s Massey Ferguson produced the world's first 'super' combine – the giant 760 – and we pay tribute to this simply massive machine and the way it ruled the American prairies as well as the smaller fields of Europe.

Ferguson on the Farm part three

    Fofm-3

Ferguson on the Farm Part Three

Our third visit to Great Shortridge farm sees Harold Beer demonstrate implements from the later Ferguson era as well as machines from the early Massey Ferguson range. We join him in the spring as he uses a Rotavator attachment to prepare a seedbed for potatoes that he then plants with an M-F 718 Automatic Potato Planter. Going on through the year, we see Harold at work with an M-F 770 Heavy-Duty Spike-Tooth harrow, a 32-7 unit seeder, an M-F 37-7 hay conditioner and a 732 mower. Some eighteen different sequences show a variety of machines in action from an M-F 203 digger-loader to unusual ploughs. Highlights include an M-F 711 potato harvester lifting the crop we saw planted earlier.
Nearly all the implements come from Harold Beer’s collection in North Devon. The programme has a full commentary scripted by Stuart Gibbard, author of The Ferguson Tractor Story and editor of Old Tractor magazine

Ferguson on the Farm Part Two

This video shows a wide range of Ferguson equipment, ploughs, cultivators and disc harrows at work. Ferguson provided a complete system of mechanisation and we see many of the rarer implements in action, including the sub-soiler, rowcrop thinner, crane, dump skip, winch, cordwood saw and hammer mill. Muck-spreading and bale-loading sequences show all the different Ferguson trailers and loaders, illustrating just how extensive the range had become by the 1950s.
Nearly all the implements come from Harold Beer’s collection in North Devon. A range of Ferguson tractors provide the power, including a rare four-wheel-drive conversion. The programme has a full commentary scripted by Stuart Gibbard, author of The Ferguson Tractor Story. The narration is by radio broadcaster and playwright David Holt

Ferguson on the Farm Part One

Harry Ferguson's system of farm mechanisation is brought to life here by some 25 implements filmed at work. Beginning with early summer cultivations and potato planting, the programme covers weed control in potatoes and kale, hay and silage-making, hedge-trimming and general farm tasks such as post-hole boring and milk-churn transport. It concludes with potato lifting, disc ploughing, earth-moving and work with the Ferguson reversible plough, leaving a companion programme to look at other winter and spring activities.
The majority of the implements are from Harold Beer’s working collection in North Devon and many were bought new. A range of Fergies provide the power, one of them still at work on the family farm where it was first used in 1949. The programme has a full commentary scripted by Stuart Gibbard, author of The Ferguson Tractor Story. The narrator is BBC broadcaster and tractor enthusiast David Holt.
